    But who for the seniors?

The Irish International player of the year

I can tell you, this was the award most completley and utterly one sided. No real suprises for who takes it then, but here's the nominations...

    Shay Given

    Richard Dunne

    Kenny Cunningham

    Clinton Morrison

So we know one person completley dominated, but who?

The Irish International player of the year award for 2005

    Shay Given

Yes, no shocks, but his winning margin was emphatic. He recieved 27 votes, the rest of the people only getting one. The fact that his win is so emphatic is a credit to Given who has long emered as an inspirational figure for us, but the fact it's so emphatic also shows how pathetic our performances had gotten by the end of the campaign that our keeper is the only person worthy of more than one vote.

No votes for Duff and Keane could be considered a suprise and also a depressing indication especially in the case of Damien Duff who in years gone by would be a shoe in for this award.

And so, only one category remains, straight into it...

The Eircom League premier division player of the year award

Another contensious one, there were many candadates here, but ultimately there was one clear winner. But before we get there, who was nominated?

    Colm Tresson

    George O'callaghan

    Danny Murphy

    Joe Gamble

    Pat McCourt

    Peter Hutton

    Ciaran Martyn

    Mark Farren

    Tony McDonnell

    Michael Devine

    Roy O'Donnavan

    Jason Byrne

    Billy Woods

    Kevin McHugh

So 14 nominations, a whopping ten of them now playing for either Cork or Derry. Shels only getting one nomination would be considered somewhat of a suprise, but that nomination did take home the golden boot, so who would be considered the best player over the course of the season?

The winner of the 2005 Eircom League premier league player of the year, as voted by you the voters...

    George O'Callaghan

Oddly, the man not considered the best mid fielder in the league is (Second to team mate Joe Gamble), by the same people, considered the best player outright. Never the less, O'Callaghan who took home a league winners medal in 2005 rounds it off with the only player of the year award worth a damn. A contender for villan of the year and a controversal figure, nobody can doubt the mans talent, and it is his talent that has seen him stand above all others in the eircom league according to the registered users of foot.ie.

In second place, Joe Gamble shared with Farren. A real indication of the quality of Corks mid field with Gamble and O'Callaghan, meanwhile Farren finishes way ahead of Byrne in the overall player of the year list despite finishing comfortabley behind him in the best striker list. Confusing perhaps, but Farrens goals really helped lift Derry up the league and was one of their key men in their rise to the top. Gamble was immense beside O'Callaghan and with the best mid fielder award can consider himself unlucky to take only a silver here, but few can argue that O'Callaghan merits the award and it is he who takes home the gold, just like he did on the last day of the 2005 league campaign.

So I just wanted to say, a big thanks to everyone who took the time out to vote or share ideas for the awards and to the mods who supported them with a sticky and an announcement. Hope you all enjoyed them, some suprises in there but overall Cork and Derry predictabley dominating most of the awards after their fantastic seasons. Anyway, for those who don't want to keep scrolling back and forth, here's the summary of how the awards went...

Best chant - "Oriel Park is a bouncy castle"

Best goal - Joint winners - Joey Ndo, Shelbourne v Shamrock Rovers, Pat McCourt, Rovers v Bray, Pat McCourt, Rovers v Finn Harps

Villian of 2005 - Roddy Collins

    Hero of 2005 - The 400 club

Worst moment of 2005 - Joint Winners - Ireland missing out on world cup qualification, Longfords 5-1 in Wales

Best Moment of 2005 - Kearneys goal v Derry City

Most improved team - Derry City

    Best Defender - Peter Hutton

    Best Midfielder - Joe Gamble

    Best Striker - Jason Byrne

    Best manager - Stephen Kenny

Total Donkey of the Season - Jimmy Aggrey

Most Disappointing Performer - Glen Crowe

Best save - Shay Given away to Cyprus

Div 1 Young player of the year - joint winners - Keith Foy, Barry Moran, Phillip Sheppard, Faz Kudozovic, Robbie Kelleher, Tadgh Purcell

EL premier Young player of the year - Liam Kearney

Div 1 Player of the year - Kieran O'Reilly

Best uncapped Irish player - Kevin Doyle

International young player of the year - Kevin Doyle

Irish international teams player of the year - Shay Given

EL premier Player of the year - George O'Callaghan

So congratulations to all the winners, I'm sure they're all absolutley delighted and agian thanks to everyone who took part, more voters this year than last year (Roughly twice as many) so that's a good sign, hopefully it'll be the same again next year.

Any comments, suggestings or general ramblings you want to leave, go ahead...

    Cheers Slash, brilliant work.

O'Callaghan shouldn't have got player of the year. Defenders rarely get such awards so I underdstand Pizza not getting it. Jason Byrne should have got that one.

Surprised the NLSA didn't get the best moment of the year award.
"The Derry fans were fantastic in both matches. They sang their hearts out all the time and created an even better atmosphere than the Cup Final. They were brilliant. - David Graham, Gretna striker

Good to see all the Bohs fans uniting to give Crowe that award even though he scored more goals than their top scorer

The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

Yeah I was delighted with the response voting wise.

Cheers for all the comments lads, it didn't really take much at all. The only real time was in doing this thread but I was delighted for the distraction from the Man U Liverpool game anyway, keeping track of the votes was straight forward enough.

Anyway, thanks again to all who took part, hopefully it'll run as smoothly next year.
