If ever there was a market created out of thin air for a product not a one of us actually needs it's the fcuking cellphone.

Irreperable damage done to language, manners, downtime ...the entire concept of being "incommunicado" is stone dead which is not a good thing.

As a one time advocate of public transport (still am theoretically) I'll not get on an intercity train or bus again until the law makes it clear that using a cellphone on one is about as socially acceptabe as dropping yer kecks and taking a crap on the seat.

Have you ever tried to get a signal for a mobile phone when within an airplane journey of a mountain? They don't work.

Waste is not a popular word down here since yesterday. Just got my yearly bill and it's up 130 euros on last year.

I'm pretty good at the recycling thing - I even take the plastic bits off the top of toothpaste containers, empty the sand out of those plastic water filters and so on to put the filters and many other things in the "blue bin" and so on

(very sad I know, I know) but what annoys me is that there is so much plastic on containers which is NOT suitable quality for recycling and ends up in dumps.

Michael Moore mentioned this in one of his books. He followed a recycling truck in New York and saw it emptying into a general dump. Private Eye mentioned that this happens in Britain too. I'll just bet that the same thing happens here as well.

Don't refuse collection companies get subsidies if they collect a certain amount of recyclable material each year?? I smell another scam.

I wonder could we recycle a number of our footballers to make one good player or the entire Dail to make one good politician??LOL

There was a TV program done on this, they followed the recyclable waste (Plastics and paper bin) from a neighbourhood in Galway and they get sent up north where the 'rubbish' is sorted by people on a 'production line' type into different bins for different types of plastic, paper and cardboard and then sent for recycling to different companies in the north and Britain

Thanks for that Eire06 - good to hear. I saw something like that before. My worry is that with the sheer volume of recyclable waste - can these firms cope with it all??

You're household waste is probably collected by the same firm as mine - Barna?? They're pretty ok actually. Reason for the price rise is that Beeslow's dump is closed and the urban subsidy is therefore gone - hence the rise. I think it's dumped in Cappataggle now. Don't mind paying for waste collection but the sheer amount of the rise was a bit of a shock - especially after Christmas. It costs 92 euros for three months with Barna -it was 112 euros per HALF YEAR in 2005 - 10 euros less for 3 months than it was for 6

For someone on salary protection and disability like me that's a fair whack.

Anyway, it'sgood to know there's a good home for all those empty red wine bottles after Yuletide. LOL

I thought Barna did the whole county and city.

I suppose it's a fair price to pay considering everything. Barna's price is 368 euro for the year. Last year it was around 224 euro. It's a little extra if you pay by the quarter or half-year. With the subsidy gone that's yearly rise of 144 euro though.

I only remembered the price for last year a while ago and though it was a 130 euro only at first.

On the invoice the blue bin (plastics, paper etc) and brown bin (bones, waste food, grass, sticks etc) are listed at free. I reckon the collection companies get a government subsidy for that.
