    EL betting

Anyone help me out here or am I just too early, wondering what price I'd get on Shels winning double and Setanta.

Comedians working on their standup material should really be in off-topic !!
The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

Alas a League/Setanta Cup double bet is not just a matter of multiplying the odds as these are classed as contingency bets as the likelihood of one is seen to increase if you win the other; even though that's exactly the chance you're taking with an ante-post bet. Chances are such a bet accepted in error at the higher price will result in the return being reduced accordingly.

Going by cumulative odds a Shels treble should be at least 66/1 but I'd guess you'd probably be lucky to be offered around half that - and most will get you a price if you ask or email them.

Judging on how they finished and their positive (albeit early yet) captures Galway at 10/1 e/w for the First mightn't be too bad.

Shels 13/8 with bigger clubs sniffing around Jason Byrne? Anyone who takes any of that wants their head examined.

Hope I'm not going to regret posting this, but how are we - an established Premier Division team who reached the League Cup semi last year and three of the last five Cup quarter-finals and with more current Irish U-21 squad members than anyone else in the league (a claim which sounds more impressive than it is! )- the same odds as a team whose only Premier Division outing resulted in the lowest points total since Monaghan and whom we beat comfortably twice last year?!

Suppose at that level it doesn't really matter, but still.

Edit - Thanks Roo! Nice to see I'm not gone mad!

Odds down the bottom are irrelevant anyway. If UCD or CHF were 1000/1, it'd still be a euro wasted.

I wouldn't worry about it. The bookies haven't a clue about Irish Football. I'd prefer if Waterford were 100/1 or whatever, because at least when the handicap prices are released for which all teams would be the same price with their allocated handicap, there would be a better chance of a bit of value. Derry had a huge handicap last year because they were completely underestimated by the bookies and so had that result wrapped up long before the season was over.

There's no point in betting on Waterford, UCD, Dublin City etc each way because the fact of the matter is they haven't really a hope of finishing 2nd, especially at odds of only 8.3/1 for the place (which is only 3.65/1 on what you would actually put down e/w at 25/1).

Trus, which in fairness is why I added "Suppose at that level it doesn't really matter, but still." Though I'd imagine those odds will form the rough basis for the FAI Cup odds, when the same argument would apply. Now I know we have a chance of winning the FAI Cup, because I've seen enough pictures of us winning it!

So in the revolutionary case of your betting not jinxing the team, you'll get more winnings. Stop moaning.

    "Relolutionary"?!?!?!

Anyway, you know I don't bet on UCD games. I just see good odds, think "Must put a fiver on that", don't and then we win. Which, after the First Division title debacle, is the way I like it!

    Galway

i think galway united are a solid bet to win div one. everything seems to coming together for united on and off the field. alan murphy has resigned plus stevie gavin is a good player signed from athlone. there is a postive atmosphere after a great run in to the end of last season. as for the challengers Rovers will obviously be up their but their current team would prob not win the thing judging by their end of season performances. finn harps are dangerous but might have to rebuild after a poor season last year and a strong possibility of losing kevin mchugh. dundalk have been poor for the last few years and are in need of big improvement and kilkenny will most likely fall back with pat scully gone and the possiblity of him taking players to rovers. if we start well we have the potential for crowds similar to that of sligo last year.

Rogue Trader, the view I was taking was if you wanted to collect 'the place' at 25/1 (say 10 e/w), you'll collect 93.33 for coming second but it will have cost you 20 because there's no place-only betting. So you're getting only 3.65/1 on your outlay of a score. Granted you do have 10 running on the win part but the chances of finishing even 2nd were remote enough in the first place. It might be better illustrated if it was a 'first three places' bet and you were really only doing it out of some kind of loyalty in the faint hope that your team would beat all expectations and do fantastically to finish third. And then wait 10 long months for it? Waterford were a best price 3.75/1 (15/4) to win in Belfield a couple of months ago!

My point is if you are realistically only hoping for the place AT BEST and accept there is NO HOPE of a win, then that is EFFECTIVELY what you are doing. I know exactly what you are saying.
