not sure it is great news but it does at least stop the debate.
What will we talk about now! We could always start the Joey Barton for Ireland thread.
The timing is rather significant though isn't it, just as England appear to have
closed the door on Nolan, Ireland do the same, I wonder if a final approach was made and he provaracated so they though s*d it, or if it's a sort of slap in the face for Nolan, whose international hopes wouuld now appear to lie with the Dutch.
Well Barton is an Irish name and he's from Liverpool so he must be eligible!
You can't help wonder why the FAI did not come to this understanding earlier & let Staunton know before he opened his mouth. Also prevent all the needless debate - which can't be good for them.
So, what have they just realised that they could not have considered before now ?

then maybe this previously unlockable monster of a thread can be consigned to memory.
Because every time a thread about Kevin Nolan's eligibility opens up, it disintegrates into arguments about the merits of players born in ireland versus so called mercenaries born outside Ireland, whether or not having nolan, or any player born outside the republic devalues the side and by extension the Eircom League, and whether or not the FAI and Staunton/Kerr are idiots for even approaching these players in the first place. Now that FIFA have stated that he is not eligible, any and all threads about him playing for us are pointless. He can't, and that's the end of it.
Well you could say that 99% of the threads degenerate into arguments. Look at all the arguements about squad and team selection, that thread needs to be shut down immediately. Infact I think I will make a post in that thread to get it closed down. While I am at it I will do the same in any other thread where there is a difference of opinion. We can't have the site degerating into a series of arguements can we.
You will see my post in that thread and it has just as much validity for closing down the thread as your does here, ie none. If everyone took your attitude it would be impossible to discuss any matter here so you might as well close the entire site down.
The jist of my post will be Staunton picks the squad, end of story, any discussion is pointless so let's have the thread padlocked. There is no justification for closing any thread, if people make abusive posts then take action against the abusive posters, not censor the thread. Threads close themselves naturally when nobody has anything further to add on the topic, there is no need for anyone to predict that situation, unless you have a crystal ball that is.
All you are doing is trying to censor topics you don't want to be talked about, well if you don't want to talk about them then you don't have to, there is no reason why you should prevent other people from talking about matter which they want to discuss.

There's nothing left to discuss about Nolan, he's not eligible, he can't play for us, he won't ever play for us, why bother discussing it?
At least those arguments stay on topic, squad and team selection and so on.Originally Posted by tricky_colour
testujin is right. If someone opened a Kevin Nolan thread in this forum I'd close it as it has absolutely nothing to do with Irish football anymore. He's not eligible, he won't play for us end of story. I'd leave this open and let the thread flow into obscurity but by the looks of it people still have things to say that have nothing to do with the topic.
Thank you Kevin for such wonderful debates, lets hope this is the last.
