Alan Kernaghan was from the North wasn't he?
Played for an underage team certainly.
Anyone know which counties have had representatives on the Ireland team down the years who were born in the county (as opposed to players whose parents were born there)?
Obviously Dublin, Cork, Donegal, Louth, Limerick and Waterford are all represented on the current panel.
Can anyone come up with any more names and counties?
Maybe you should put her on a leash, agent-man.

Our best player ever came from County London, birth wise. The great Paul McGrath.

Nick Colgan is from Louth
Steve Finnan was born in Limerick
Alan Lee was born in Galway
god this is hard, i'll have to have a cup of tea and a think about it.
Seems strange that galway hasn't provided many. Is John Herrick the only galway man to represent Ireland? Oh and Kernaghan was born in England.

Apart from the just-mentioned Alan Lee of course - who only lived there for a year or two before moving down the road from me - was apparently in the year ahead of me in primary school! Word has it that he was the biggest glory-hunter (or DIY, for those who called it that) going!Originally posted by Dodge

The angry ants father is from Galway.

What about Eamonn Deacy who was also born in Galway and he played for Galway and Aston Villa.Originally posted by Dodge

There's also County Westmeath, where Turlough O'Connor was born in Athlone.
There are five County Donegal players who played for Ireland, they are Patsy Gallagher, Mickey Gallagher, Packie Bonner, Shay Given and Gary Doherty. Doherty was born in Buncrana and raised in England, and Patsy Gallagher was born in Milford and raised in Scotland, the others were all born and raised in Donegal.
I think Packie Bonner and Mickey Gallagher are the only players from Gaeltacht areas to have played for Ireland. Hibernian's Mickey Gallagher from Arranmore Island, may also be the only player from the off-shore islands to play for Ireland when he represented Ireland in 1954.

Mickey Gallagher was the first native Irish speaker to represent Ireland.
There's also Willie Browne from Longford (1963-64) and Tommy Muldoon from Athlone Co Westmeath (1927).
Bill Gorman was another Sligoman to represent Ireland from 1936-47.
There's also the following:
Tom Breen - Belfast
Tony Byrne - Co Laois
Brendan Carroll - Co Wicklow
Oliver Conmy - Co Mayo
Seamus Dunne - Co Wicklow
Billy Lacey - Co Wexford
Jimmy McAlinden - Belfast
Andy McEvoy - Co Wicklow
Billy McMillan - Co Antrim
George Moulson - Co Tipperary
Josiah Sloan - Co Armagh
Jackie Vernon - Belfast
So far that's Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Louth, Donegal, Sligo, Longford, Westmeath, Wicklow, Wexford, Laois, Galway, Mayo, Tipperary, Antrim, Down and Armagh. That's 18 counties.
No one born in County Kerry that I know of has played for Ireland but Gary Breen's father came from Beaufort Co Kerry and his great grandfather won an All-Ireland medal. Andy Townshend's grandmother also came from Co Kerry.
Eamonn Dunphy's roots are in Co Kilkenny and Niall Quinn's father comes from Co Tipperary. Both support their respective counties in hurling.
I know the original post was about players born in the respective counties, but Mattie Holland's link to Ireland is through Co. Monaghan.

I knew he played for Cork but though he was a Galway man (basing it solely on Mark Herrick's birth place) My apologies to all...Originally posted by The Donie Forde
