    New Byrne offer

    Shels turn down Byrne offer

    July 24, 2006 - eleven a side.com

eircom League title favourites Shelbourne have turned down an offer from an unspecified club for Irish international striker Jason Byrne.

Byrne took his tally for the season to 17 goals in all competitions with a double in the 6-0 win over UCD on Friday night.

The 28-year-old is now on 11 league goals, three clear of his nearest rival, crocked Drogheda United star Declan O’Brien, and looking odds-on to secure the league’s top marksman prize for the fourth season running.

Byrne, who won a second senior cap for Ireland against Chile in May, attracted a €500,000 bid from Swedish big guns Djurgardens during the winter and his current level of form has brought more interest, with an unnamed Danish club said to have lodged a bid with Shels last week.

Manager Pat Fenlon told the Irish Daily Mirror: “The situation is that a club has made an offer. I put that offer to our board, who turned it down. I spoke to Jason and he has to come back to me to tell me what he wants to do. I hope we can hang on to him.”

anyone know who the mysterious club is? most likely odense id imagine..

Leyton Orient were reported to be interested in him a little while back in the tabloids.

If it is true (that a bid has been made) maybe Shels arent in as bad a situation as we think

Unless you believe the "all is rosey" hogwash that comes out of the Shelbourne fans and Ollie's boys who post here.

Or in a worse situation and have to talk up the bidding. Don't forget Bray still due half the fee, which has proved a major stumbling block in the past.

Despite the problems Byrne remains bullish about the club's future, insisting (as he has done for a couple of months now) a multi-million-euro investment is close to being finalised. Talks are also well advanced in relation to a move to Santry stadium, where the club expect to secure a lease long enough to allow freedom to develop the stadium into a home capable of generating considerable revenue.

Clonliffe Harriers and Athletics Ireland have received assurances their access to the stadium will be unaffected, which means the Fingal County Council-backed redevelopment will have to be staggered over a number of years. Byrne, however, now believes an application to rezone Tolka Park will be made by Christmas.

There is a certain urgency about it all given a consortium led by Ossie Kilkenny has already paid for first refusal on the site. The deal was struck several years ago but the group has since made a number of payments that have allowed Shelbourne to make up their annual trading deficit, and with each passing year, it is feared, the final sale will be worth significantly less in real terms.

Given their problems this season, few would now argue that Shelbourne have any real option but to sell up and set up shop elsewhere. The details of the Santry deal, if and when it is concluded, will be interesting though, because the club have already toyed with two agreements that would have resulted in moves to green-field sites as well as the proposed ground-sharing deal with Bohemians.

And while many neutrals who wish Shelbourne well from afar because of the club's importance to Irish football would respect Byrne's ability to keep the show on the road in what have often been difficult circumstances, it would surely be preferable if the likes of Finbarr Flood, Colin Murphy and Shay Weafer - all highly respected within the game - had not resigned from the club's management committee just when such fundamental decisions in relation to the club's future were about to be taken.

ok so lets make this very clear to the shels fans, AGAIN

Ollie sold your soul to the property developer devils, "some years ago", since when the value of any rezoning led lease sale profit has been eroded by having that same devil pay off your favoured clusb debts/tax laibilities every year. The devil now wants his pound of flesh, in desperation a share deal at Dalymount was proposed, when that failed, the rest of the board with an interest resigned and Ollie is dragging yee off to an uncertain future in Santry.

Your favoured club is living beyond its means, honestly God help yis.

That's ironic given that you came on here claiming Georgie was begging Shels for a contract without proof.
    Typical Shels double standards.

Of coure he's maiking it up as well, they were owed money and they got paid. From what I've heard Ollie got a bridging loan last week, hoping to pay it off with the Sunderland money.

I was talking about the fact you lot thought come the 24th it would be a free for all.
Maybe not so much on here but go to the Bohs message board and they are talking about Crowe coming back to them on the 24th.

I never said nothing was wrong and deadlines were not set.
It was not the death of Shels as some predicted.

Im sick of saying this but when you all get a shels story you take away some of the facts and blow it up into some major story. Some of the crap posted here about shels is crazy.

I notice you failed to copy and paste some other parts of my post, like the parts where the players have signed pre contract agreements!! where are they now??

Considering Jusy was the month where shels would meet their maker its nice to have had some convincing wins the past couple of weeks and everyone happy in the camp!!

Sure some Cork lads thought Kearney done Shels a favour as they couldnt pay his wages Dodge even you would have to admit that the National Enquirer wouldnt make up some of the stories that are posted here about shels.

Small bits of information get out and its turned into something its not.
