I'd love to see Brian Barry Murphy be brought in in some capacity but considering Carsley will be very much a training ground coach himself that might not work.

Interesting and exciting times ahead. Delighted that they seem to have gotten the best available candidate
I had a premonition a long time ago (around the time his career was winding down and he began to get stick from the Lansdowne Road fans) that Kilbane would one day manage Ireland. Not quite in the hot seat yet but close enough

Interesting shout. Kennedy has mostly coached in his post playing career. When his first stint into management didn't work out because of COVID he went back to coaching for a year and a half.

Spent half a year shadowing the head of Ipswich's academy for six months before spending a season as assistant manager to Lee Bowyer.

Think the big issue with Kennedy is management will probably always be on his mind. Could appoint him next month and he's gone by the summer or after the NLs.

For your actual no.2 think you need someone you know will stick around. Think it's somewhat okay if you're no.3 switches. The big problem for Kenny was Andrews was a meh assistant and the likes of Barry and O'Shea were more like assistants than coaches for Kenny.

Typically the profile of the ideal #2 is someone who is a really good coach who can run things on the training ground, but I don't think that's what Carsley will want or should want. Carsley is a highly regarded coach himself and as such should probably be leading that end of things himself.

What might be good is a wise old head who can fill those gaps in his experience as well as acting as a sounding board. Someone who has a decent amount of experience managing in the Championship and/or Premier League would be good. Handling club managers is as much part of the job as managing the players these days. Someone who already has strong relationships with those guys would be great, and ironically enough Chris Hughton would be ideal, although he's probably still well enough placed to get another club job. I doubt the whole Ghana thing will stick to him and he has a good record with Newcastle and Brighton to point to.

Brian McDermott might be a possibility. I read an interview with Steve Bruce where he said he would consider that sort of role. Or maybe someone like Paul Lambert.

After that someone who knows the League of Ireland is important. I have my doubts that League of Ireland players have much to offer the international team, but it can't be ignored completely. By the same token asking premier league players to listen to someone who's only success has been at League of Ireland level reminds me of the urban legend of David Moyes making Rio Ferdinand watch videos of Phil Jagielka. Basically, what I'm saying is Damien Duff should be involved.

Alan Kelly has been working as a goalkeeping coach at Everton for years now. If he could work alongside Carsley that would be ideal. Dean Kiely is in a similar role at Palace. Failing that it's hard to look past Shay Given.

    * EDIT: Added in about Dean Kiely. Had momentarily forgotten about him despite him bening Kenny's goalie coach. Probably the first time Lee Carsley and Dean Kiely have been mentioned in the same post and it has absolutely nothing to do with that bloody playoff against Turkey.

Oh. It's very positive that Paul McShane is working with the U21s. The FAI seem to have started prioritising giving coaching opportunities to former senior internationals. There's a natural authority that comes from having 35 senior caps in the house that no amount of success as in our domestic leagues can replace. I couldn't give a monkey's if they got those caps as a result of playing for clubs in Britain, Ireland, Germany or Darkest Peru, but we all know that's going to mean giving those chances to guys who played in England or for Celtic, instead of the usual lads who get jobs by hanging around in the Abbotstown canteen.

Slightly less positive headlines on the manager situation this morning. There will be a lot of pressure on the FAI to get Carsley over the line now though after yesterday's leaks.

Is Gerry Peyton an option for goalkeeping coach?

Maybe a different generation so mightn't fit, and maybe he's retired altogether at this stage; he's 67 and it's two years since his last role.

But he spent 15 years at Arsenal (2003 to 2018) so he can't be a bad coach.

If the carsley deal goes pear shaped
The worst thing they should be is panic hire
Just wait another month, regroup and see who is free etc

Can you have a low water mark? Surely it'd be washed away if the water level rose. If the water level was falling it'd become a high water mark.

I'd forgotten that Southgate's contract was up in December. Barring a EURO's win in the Summer (which is far from impossible, albeit you'd place other teams over England right now) I wonder if Carley's been promised he'll be considered at the very least. There are a few other relatively high-profile English managers knocking around though, so that's very far from a sure thing. If he turns down the Ireland job because he thinks he'll get the England job, that's a big risk to take. I'd actually say he'd be more likely to end up as England manager if he drags Ireland up a bit for a while first.

Absolutely zero chance lee carsley gets the English job
The FA deal in 100s of millions in sponsorship deals. They have to have a house hold name in the hot seat

Could sell manure to raise funds if that's the case. As it stands they seem to create no value at all at most levels.

Klopp is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season - to live a normal life - being an international manager is a lot less work than a club manager
